Theres no reason to ever get this in the store if you can get it this cheaply online. I bought this one for less than a dollar (99% price cut over the store) and it works just fine. Theres not much to say, its a firewire cable. I went into an electronics store and was outraged by the prices they were charging.
Couldn't dismount from Finder. Ordered 4 of these, since price was good. Swapped back and forth between my good, usual, (thicker and shorter) cable, and the old cable worked fine every time, while the new one wouldn't let the MacBook Pro see the external drive.Tried a second one, thinking maybe just a bad wire in first cable. And I can't start that until *after* the internal drive re-indexing is finished.Don't touch these 6-foot cables with a 10-foot pole.
Time Machine volume didn't mount. Ran Disk Repair on it, since Disk Utility could see it, but couldn't be repaired: "Invalid key length; Volume check failed; Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed." AND - internal drive needed re-indexing.So, now I have to totally reformat external drive and start Time Machine backups all over again - some of you know how many hours that takes for an initial backup, and I've lost all my past document versions, which I find handy to have. Shut down computer from Windows. On restart, my BootCamp partition on main drive was renamed to "NO NAME". Mac started up in BootCamp/Windows, although it hadn't been running before restart and it usually starts in Mac environment.
Or tried to: after churning away for many minutes, got a dialog saying that the disk would be mounted "with limited access" due to problems, that I should back up immediately and reformat the volume. Hard restart. Tried one, external drive wouldn't mount, even Disk Utility could not see it. Tried to dismount from Disk Utility, to no avail; Finder froze.
Decided not to try backup with "limited access" availability (duh). Disk didn't mount, but Disk Utility could see it, so I mounted it from there. This is a Time Machine volume, and haven't had a problem with it with other cable.
The prices are so low that it's scarcely worth the time to correct such mistakes, but they might want to pay more attention to how they're filling their orders. I've twice ordered from these folks and both times they sent the wrong cable.
Connects my Macbook to my external HD with no problem. Th product does what it's supposed to and it is cheap.
So I have a question to reviewers who claim that they used this cable with their Macs: how did you manage to connect a "male" plug with a "male" socket. Conclusion: The cable itself might even work fine but I give it only 1 star for its deceptive potential for Mac users for whom it is practically useless. However the zoomed-out part of the picture showing the plug in greater detail is from a different cable and it would not fit in a Mac. Fortunately I did take a second, more careful look.
08, 2008:Since another customer posted a favorable review I would like to point out that the picture of the cable is quite misleading. So perhaps somebody could post a comment clarifying what it is that actually gets shipped.(The picture to which I am referring is from Sept. The white, translucent cable in the background would indeed be suitable for Mac-to-Mac connection without need for any additional adapters.
I also wanted to buy this cable for my Mac-to-Mac migration. Added on Sept. 08, 2008 and it displays white, translucent cable with a rectangular enlargement showing the plug)
This cable has "MALE" plugs, Macs have "MALE" sockets (for this kind of plug shape). If you need a 6-pin FireWire cable for your Mac then skip this one.
